Clay’s Radar
There’s nothing like screaming at the top of your lungs at the ocean. It’s a competition in San Francisco, and wouldn’t you know it, a lady with ties to Indiana won it. Olivia Gugliemotto was crowned the winner, and is a former member of the IU Women’s rowing team.
@kqednews “Just got laid off? Your love life a disaster? Not one, but two of your violins got stolen?” asked a mysterious flier posted around San Francisco. “Well then, a guttural scream at the sea may be right for you.” Adorned with stock imagery of a man in suit and tie knee-deep in a scream at the beach, the flier included a QR code with details for a gathering to scream at the sea. On Saturday, around one hundred people convened at Vista del Mar at Sutro Heights Park to do just that. The event included vocal warm-ups, a screaming contest, the one really big scream, vocal cool-downs, followed by a snack of freshly cut fruit. Danielle Egan, scream conductor, said she came up with the idea because “there’s a lot of reasons to scream these days, and I just felt like I could really use a good one. And then I thought screaming is better with friends.” Egan is the creator of other absurdist events designed to get people outside like Pursuit, a city-wide scavenger hunt, and Sit Club, described as “run club but without the bad parts.” While flier-based events like this one have recently gained popularity for their return to analog methods of advertising, this one also gained notoriety after San Francisco resident Greg Dewar posted a photo of it on his Instagram account. He expected his friends to like it, but instead woke up to it having gone viral, with upwards of 300,000 views. “One of the things I like about living here is you still have an element of unpredictability. It fits the mood of the times,” he said.
