The long-time grocery store building on North Main is coming down.
It housed a Great Scott store for many years before it was taken over as a Buehler’s Buy Low and then a Buehler’s IGA.
The store closed almost three years ago.
The closure left the Jacobsville neighborhood — consisting largely of elderly and shut-in residents — without a readily available source of fresh meat and produce.
In recent months, a special bus has taken residents to grocery stores outside the neighborhood once a week.
Kelley Coures, director of Evansville’s Department of Metropolitan Development, says the Indianapolis company House Investments will develop the property to include affordable residential units and commercial space.
A ground breaking is hoped for in August.
