For many years people in Evansville have asked, “why don’t we have a Costco?” Now we have a Costco.
The 157,000 square foot wholesaler opened its doors Friday amid pomp and circumatance with more than a thousand shoppers, baskets in hand, waiting to pass through the doors.
The oddysey began five years ago when realtor Joe Kiefer welcomes the president of Costco to Evansville to look at possible sites for a store. The president noticed a Donut Bank and asked Kiefer to stop, which he did. That’s when the president discovered the Fruit Fritter. He bought one, plus coffee, for everyone in the place, and the pair left to check sites.
Later, when the deal was done, the president returned to check the final site and again asked to be taken to Donut Bank for a fruit fritter.
And that’s how Costco came to Evansville.
The store is now open and memberships are being taken in the vestibule.
