When you think of college football in the state of Indiana, one would normally think of Notre Dame or Purdue, or IU. Heck, most people in Evansville can remember a time where UE had a football team. But there’s one college football rivalry that’s been played every single year since 1890, and it’s just a few days older than the first Army/Navy game, older than Michigan/Ohio State, and the Red River Rivalry. It’s not Indiana/Purdue. Today, you get to learn about the Monon Bell Rivalry.
Simply one of the best rivalries in all of college football!

In Crawfordsville, Indiana, Wabash College sits just 50 minutes west from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway taking I-74. It was founded in 1832 as a men’s private college, consisting of 12 sports teams in total at the Division III level. Meanwhile in Greencastle, Indiana sits DePauw University. This university was founded in 1837 originally as Indiana Asbury College, but changed to DePauw-U in 1884. DePauw and Wabash College are only a 37 minute drive from each other on US-231, but this rivalry soon gained a trophy thanks to a railroad line that stretched from Chicago to New Albany, Indiana. This railroad also crossed another line in Monon, Indiana, and the train company gave away a train bell to the college that won the football game between DePauw and Wabash. Since then, the Monon Bell has been stolen a few times, won by a team, lost by a team, and continues to be one of the most coveted prizes in all of college football.
