Five day week full of events for teens

PRESS RELEASE
Owensboro Youth Empowerment Summit
Teen Week is coming back to the city of Owensboro next month. Owensboro Youth Empowerment Summit, or OYES, in
collaboration with Daviess County Public Library and the H.L. Neblett Center, will be bringing a full week of events and activities
specifically aimed for teens.
OYES originally began as an annual event in March of 2007. The objective was to create a conference like program for youth
around the topics of drugs/alcohol, teen pregnancy, education, peer pressure/bullying, and black history. Founder, DeMarcus
Curry, wanted to continue the positive atmosphere he grew up around. The youth conferences have been running annually ever
since, with some of the youth from attendance now becoming volunteers for the nonprofit.
During the 2020 pandemic OYES continued the summit events online with the “Shock the System” event in August and the Breast
Cancer Awareness event in October, both on Facebook live. But things took a turn when they hosted the “Job Fair for the
Homeless” event at the Pitino Shelter in November of 2020. After word spread about the homeless event another job fair was held
in April 2021 at The Party Space Place with 18 employers giving interviews for their current openings. But it was the Teen Job Fair
in October 2021 that gave OYES a new vision.
March 2024 was the beginning of Teen Week, with a Teen Financial Workshop, Resume and Interview Workshop, the Teen Job
Fair, and Bullying/Suicide Prevention workshop.
And now we have the second phase of Teen Week that will take place October 21st – October 25th. The list of events include:
*College Fair – Colleges and Universities from the state of Kentucky and surrounding areas on site for high school seniors apply
and learn more information.
*Teen Financial Workshop – Nico Bustamante, representative from Old National Bank, will be teaching teens financial basics. It’s
open to middle and high school students. Must be registered to attend this event.
*Resume and Interview Workshop – Volunteers from the community will be on site to help the teens prepare their resumes and help
with mock interviews.
*Teen Job Fair – Companies will be onsite to host open interviews while other businesses discuss their current openings and how
to apply. Other resources will be at the fair as well.
*”Stop the BS”, Bullying and Suicide Prevention – A speaker will be teaching how to prevent bullying and how to handle situations
of thoughts of suicide. The youth will also have an opportunity to share their own stories of dealing with bullying and suicide. This is
open for all youth and will be held at the Neblett Center.
