At the close of the State of the Union address, Indiana Senator Todd Young gave President Trump a special memento.
“I gave the president a bracelet I’ve been wearing for years,” Young explained. “It was given to me by Sandy Terwiske. She is a resident of Dubois County.”
Her son, Alec Terwiske, joined the U.S. Marine Corps right after high school. Months later, he passed away during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
“Sandy visited with me sometime after his passing and thanked me for the conversations we had after his passing and she asked me to wear the bracelet,” Young said.
“I wore it and I conveyed to the president just recently that Sandy really appreciated how he welcomed fallen heroes back to the country when they land at Dover Air Force Base,” he added.
When the president happened to walk by at the State of the Union address, Young seized the moment.
“I said, I think that mother in Indiana would really appreciate it, Mr. President, if you had this bracelet.”
The moment was captured on C-SPAN. Young said he hopes the president will treasure the bracelet moving forward.
