THE BASICS
ISO Float Center is Evansville’s first float and wellness center.
They offer two sensory deprivation tanks. The dark, soundproof tub is filled with approximately 800 pounds of Epsom salt that is dissolved into 200 gallons of water. The water is heated to skin temperature, and the salt allows you to float in the tank for either 60 or 90 minutes.
Floating is said to provide a deep, relaxing, therapeutic experience similar to meditation. It also relieves anxiety and stress, reduces muscle pain, and increases energy. Several athletes and professionals say they float to increase focus.
MY EXPERIENCE
I was a bit skeptical of the tank at first, but owners Josh and Andi assured me that fears are normal and helped me feel more comfortable. I was surprised after getting inside the tank that I didn’t feel anxious at all. I felt that I had plenty of room, and I used the floating lights they have available so it wasn’t so dark. Knowing that you can enter or exit the tank at any time you want, regardless of the time you have left, gave me some relief as well.
My first time floating was really cool. I struggled at first to turn off my brain, but I ended up letting go – or falling asleep, I don’t know – at some point and woke up to the soft music they play to let you know your float is over. I’m not sure how long I was in that state. 2 minutes? 12? More? Afterwards, I felt the most relaxed and the most energized I can remember being in a long time, and at the same time. It was a great feeling. I drove home with a big smile on my face, waving at people as they passed me because I was too chill to be in a hurry. I’ve floated four times now, and each time is a little different, but I recognize the benefits immediately. I feel happier, less stressed, and I always sleep better the night after I float, too.
The environment at ISO Float Center is relaxing, the float room, tank and showers are always clean, and the owners, Andi and Josh, are not only knowledgeable and accommodating, but extremely nice people. I highly recommend floating at ISO Float Center to anyone looking to improve their overall wellness.
BEFORE YOU GO
ISO Float Center is located in the North Park Shopping Center inside The Arcade. They are open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The price varies on length of float, and is $55 for 60 minutes or $70 for 90 minutes. They offer various packages as well, including a cost-saving introductory package that I recommend for beginning floaters, and a membership option, too. You can call or book your session online on their website, where you’ll find a list of tips and what to expect. For example, you’ll want to avoid caffeine in the hours leading up to your float, as well as shaving since the Epsom Salt can irritate freshly shaved skin. If you have a new tattoo, you’ll want to wait until it’s completely healed, and if you’ve just had a spray tan or dyed your hair, you need to wait at least 7-10 days. Otherwise, just show up and relax and let go.
